Qualifications (Level 2 + Level 3)

This pathway combines two regulated qualifications that build on each other, giving you a clear route into personal training.

First, you complete the Level 2 Certificate in Planning and Delivering Gym Based Exercise (RQF). This is the foundation for working in a gym environment, supporting clients safely and professionally, and delivering effective gym-based sessions. It covers essential knowledge such as anatomy and physiology, health and safety in a fitness setting, and how to plan and instruct gym-based exercise. It is delivered through blended learning with a practical element, including observation, so you are not just learning theory but also demonstrating what you can do in a real setting.

You then progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Planning and Delivering Personal Training (RQF), which develops you to work more independently with clients. This level focuses on programme design for personal training clients, applying nutritional principles, delivering structured PT sessions, and building the professionalism and business awareness needed to operate successfully. Like Level 2, it includes practical requirements and expects you to have an environment where you can plan and deliver training with clients.

Together, these qualifications give you a recognised, work-ready pathway that supports progression from gym instructing into personal training.

Awarding body

Both qualifications are awarded by Focus Awards, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation used widely across sport, fitness, and vocational training. That matters because it means your qualification sits within the regulated UK framework, with clear standards and credible assessment. Focus Awards qualifications are designed around real competence, so you are assessed on what you can do in practice, not just what you can memorise. This gives employers confidence and helps clients trust your professionalism, especially when you are working with people’s health, safety, and performance.

Physical participation is also essential.

What’s the Return on Investment (ROI)?

Personal training can offer strong ROI because your earning potential grows as your experience, confidence, and client base improve. Earnings vary widely, especially if you are self-employed, but there is clear progression from gym-based roles into higher-value personal training work. The National Careers Service lists fitness instructor salaries at around £17,000 (starter) to £27,000 (experienced), while personal trainer earnings are often described as variable depending on hours, setting, and client demand.

With CareerValu, you can start from £199.99 today, spreading the total investment of £2,399.88 across 12 months. That makes it realistic to qualify while you build experience and confidence on the gym floor.

  • Entry-level ROI: £17,000 to £27,000 (gym instructing and fitness instructor work)
  • Mid-level ROI: around £25,000 to £35,000 (growing PT experience and steady client bookings)
  • Senior ROI: £35,000 to £50,000+ (experienced PTs, specialists, strong client base, added services)
